<image:title>Exhibitions - mix & match</image:title>
<image:caption>Mix & Match is a contemporary ceramic wall mural made specifically for Iceland´s annual design festival DesignMarch 2022. The work is an abstract collage-like ensemble of unique hand-made ceramic relief pieces. Mix & Match was exhibited in Ásmundarsalur, Reykjavik during DesignMarch, May 2022. The mural combines a wide variety of ceramic materials and techniques. Ceramic as a material is ancient and familiar to everyone: it has been used in various cultures for millennia. Laura Pehkonen creates unique ceramic parts from several different types of clay using numerous different ceramic techniques, both ancient and modern. Through the use of various materials and techniques she creates a kind of worldwide and temporal map of ceramics. Many different shapes, surfaces, textures and patterns form in the work. The parts form diverse abstract compositions on the wall surface. With its sections, the work creates large lines that work from a distance. Perceived up close, the details of the ceramic pieces evoke in the viewer the joy of exploring and discovering. An abstract work is equal to each of its experiencers: it does not exclude anyone’s interpretation but evokes personal imagery and a flow of consciousness in each experiencer regardless of viewer ́s age, gender or background. photos: Rainy Siagian</image:caption>

<image:title>Miscellaneous works - Namupalat / Treats 2024</image:title>
<image:caption>Treats is an artwork composed of 140 unique ceramic pieces. Like most of the ceramic wall pieces I have created in recent years, Treats is intended to be explored both visually and through gentle touch. In the pieces, I have extensively used a variety of materials and techniques from different historical periods and cultures of ceramics. For example, several different commercial clays, rare domestic kaolin I dug up myself from Northern Finland, porcelain clay I mixed myself, red clay from the Koria brick factory, various self-developed glazes, as well as ancient-style anagama wood-fired kiln firing. By combining different materials and techniques, the work creates a kind of temporal and geographical map expressed through ceramics. The combination of different colors and shapes in Treats offers endless possibilities for visual exploration, whether up close or from a distance. The experience and comparison of various forms and surface textures by gently touching with the fingertips also provides a delightful tactile exploration. The artwork was displayed in the spring of 2025 at the ”On senses” collaborative exhibition organized by the Finnish Museum of Craft and Artists O, which, to my delight, attracted over 10,000 visitors during its run. Materials: Various stoneware clays, porcelain, red clay, wild kaolin from Kainuu, underglaze colors, engobes, glazes, glass Size: 160 x 190 cm photos: Craft Museum of Finland/Anni Ilves & Laura Pehkonen</image:caption>
